Poets
When I was young
Poetry always rhymed-
Not just here and there,
But all the time.
When I was older
Some poetry rhymed-
Some of the time,
But not all the time.
Now that I'm older,
Poetry still rhymes-
Every once in a while,
From time to time.
When I was young,
Poetry made sense-
Everything together,
Even the verb tense.
When I was older,
Poetry sometimes made sense-
Although not as much,
And losing the tense.
Now that I'm old and gray,
Poetry rarely makes sense-
It's lost most of its beauty,
And almost all of its sense.
Poetry paints pictures,
Using descriptive word choices-
So the reader can "see"
And even "hear voices".
Poetry tells stories,
And teaches us lessons,
If we follow its rules,
We'll enjoy the sessions.
Poetry sings songs,
And harmonizes well-
But the "poetry" of today
Doesn't "ring my bell"!
