Magic the Gathering card analysis: Bloodchief Ascension

"Bloodchief Ascension" is a black enchantment printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Zendikar." This is one of the five Ascension enchantments printed in the Zendikar expansion set. So far, this is a type of enchantment that could be used in a control deck that is meant to send cards to the graveyard by whatever means necessary.

The converted mana cost for Bloodchief Ascension is one. You are going to need one black mana to bring Bloodchief Ascension from your hand onto the battlefield. For what Bloodchief Ascension can do, one black mana is definitely worth it. Keep in mind that Bloodchief Ascension is an enchantment spell. It means that Bloodchief Ascension is susceptible to anything and everything that affects enchantment spells.

What does Bloodchief Ascension do in the first place?

Like the other Ascension enchantment spells, you have to build up quest counters. Once you have enough quest counters on Bloodchief Ascension, you get to use its special ability. However, there are stipulations that need to be met before you can put quest counters on Bloodchief Ascension.

This is done at the start of each end step. At the start of each end step, if any of your opponents have lost at least two points of life, you get to put a quest counter on Bloodchief Ascension. In this respect, if you are playing a free-for-all game, you probably will get to use the main ability of Bloodchief Ascension by your next turn. In order to use the main ability of Bloodchief Ascension, you will need at least three quest counters.

When the ability of Bloodchief Ascension kicks in, you can make an opponent lose two points of life whenever a card gets sent to his/her graveyard. You gain two points of life in return. In a pure black deck, you can combine this with "Megrim" and "Sanguine Bond." Megrim will deal your opponents two points of damage whenever they discard a card from their hands. Sanguine Bond makes opponents lose life points equal to the amount of life points you gain.

In a black and blue deck, you can combine this with "Hedron Crab." Hedron Crab has a Landfall ability which makes a target opponent "mill" the top three cards of his/her library into the graveyard. When that is combined with Bloodchief Ascension, you can make that opponent lose six points of life. Then, you get to gain six points of life in the process. On top of that, you could also combine that with "Archive Trap" which forces a target player to mill the top thirteen cards of his/her library into the graveyard. In this respect, Archive Trap and Bloodchief Ascension would make a target opponent lose twenty six points of life.

Overall, Bloodchief Ascension is a great card to have in a control deck. In a strict black deck or in a black and blue control deck, you can definitely find much use out of Bloodchief Ascension.
