Whether for one child or many children festive crafts can be fun and lead to many fond memories. But what crafts to create for or during the Christmas holiday?
From Christmas cards, bells created from small planting pots, Christmas hairpieces, felt wreaths to Christmas candy cane ornaments, popcorn house ornaments, and Christmas stationary, these are easy Christmas crafts for kids to create.
Christmas Cards:
Items needed would be one piece of white paper (standard size), small to medium Christmas foam cut outs (found at local craft stores), standard glue, red crayon or marker, green crayon or marker, and one 2' white ribbon.
The instructions are easy. Simply fold the paper once and then again to create the card form. Have a child write a nice Christmas greeting, such as Merry Christmas, on the top center of the front of the card in any color they desire. Inside of the card the child will write a longer greeting with thoughts from their hearts. If the child is too young to do so, have them color whatever artwork they wish on the inside of the card. Have the child place the Christmas cut-outs on the front of the card. This is also called the face of the card. The child can place the cut-outs anywhere they wish to as you, the adult, will glue them on for the child and sit the card aside to allow proper drying time. If your child is old enough to glue the cut-outs on themselves, allow them to. A Christmas card is born.
Silver Bells from Small Planting Pots:
Items needed would be one small miniature pot with a hole on the bottom (found at local craft stores), one sheet of newspaper, one paint brush (small to medium in size), silver glitter (or silver glitter glue to spread), standard glue, a 1' strand of white yarn, one small bell with eye for tying, and one 6" strand of thin red ribbon with a 6" strand of thin green ribbon.
The instructions are easy. Take the planting pot and either spread glue all over the outside of it with the paint brush or use the silver glitter glue to spread all over the outside of the pot. If you are using glitter, sprinkle the silver glitter all over the glue after placing the pot top down onto the newspaper. Allow to dry.
Take the white yarn end and tie it to the bell. From the inside of the planting pot pull up the yarn so that the bell is inside of the pot. Have a child take the large holed bead and thread the yarn from above the pot into the hole of the bead. Once they have at least one inch of string loose inside of the pot so that the bell can move freely, re-thread the yarn into the bead so that it secures the bead into place. In other words, you will have the yarn go into the bell once, go around the bead with the yarn and enter the yarn again. Have the child take the red ribbon and tie a bow underneath the bead then take the green ribbon and tie a bow above the bead. They have created a very nice bell to enjoy during Christmas. They can also use this as an ornament if they tie the end to an ornament hook.
Kids Christmas Hairpieces:
Items needed would be a barrette, 1' length of thin green ribbon, 1' length of thin red ribbon, 1' length of thin white ribbon, scissors (optional), and beads (optional).
Simply have your child tie the red ribbon on one end and wrap the ribbon around the barrette. When they have covered a third of the barrette have them pull it through the last turn to secure it's place. Have the child tie the white ribbon next to where they left off and do the same when they reach the same amount of length (secure it by pulling it through the last turn). Have the child tie the green ribbon where they left off and complete the rest of the barrette then work the last portion into the last turn to secure it. What to do with the loose ends? You can either have them cut them, place beads on them or allow the loose ends to move freely.
Kids Felt Wreaths:
Items needed would be one piece of standard green felt, one piece of standard red felt, scissors, and standard glue.
Easy as A, B, C's, a child would cut out a circle in the center of the green felt with child safe scissors. They will cut out the edges to make a round exterior so that what they have created looks like a green wreath. The child will cut out little circles from the red felt, this is the berries. Have the child glue their berries onto the green wreath anywhere they wish. Allow to dry. They have created a wonderful Christmas wreath that they can be proud of.
Kids Christmas Candy Cane Ornaments:
Items needed would be one candy cane, one 6" thin green ribbon, one 6" string, and one standard ornament hook.
First they will tie a string onto the candy cane around the curved section. Make sure they tie a tight knot to secure the string onto the candy cane. Have the child tie a bow where the string meets the candy cane and then have them tie the end of the string onto an ornament hook. It's as easy as 1, 2, 3. They have created a candy cane ornament.
Kids Popcorn House Ornaments:
Items needed would be a bowl of popcorn, one small box, one medium paint brush, standard glue, one 6" string, one medium sized bead, and one ornament hook.
Have the child poke a hole on the small box in the center top. Tie the bead onto one end of the string and open up the box so that they can see the inside of the box. Have them work the string through the hole and pull up the string from the other side. You should be able to hold up the box once you pull up the string when you are through. Take the paint brush and brush on the glue by squirting tiny beads of glue onto the top of the box that is facing up. Spread the glue to cover the top of the box. Place the popcorn onto the glue and allow to dry. Turn the box another way and do the same. Once you have turned all sides of the box into popcorn appeal, take the thin red ribbon and tie a bow above the string that is outside of the box. Have them tie the end of the string onto a hook. They have created a popcorn house ornament.
Rudolph Hand Puppet:
Items needed would be one small paper bag with no handles, one piece of black construction paper, one piece of red construction paper, one piece of white construction paper, one piece of brown construction paper, and standard glue.
First the child will cut out two 1" circles the size of grapes from the black construction paper. Then the child should cut out one 2" circle the size of a walnut from the red construction paper. After this have the child cut out two 2" white circles the size of walnuts. Have the child fold the brown paper in half horizontally. Have the child draw an antler on one side as the brown paper is folded. After this have the child cut the antler out as the paper is folded, they will end up with two antlers when they are done. Now, here comes the fun part!
Have the child glue the small black circles onto the larger white circles, one black to one white circle. Put them aside. Have the child turn the bag upside down after opening it so that the opening of the bag is on the table. Have them glue the red circle onto the edge closest to you so that the red circle is half on the bag and the other half is not on the bag at all. Have them glue the part on the bag down. Now have the child fold the bag shut.
Have the child clue the white/black circles onto each side of the red nose but closer to the other side of the bottom of the bag. The red circle is Rudolph's nose and the white/black circles are his eyes. On the side where they glued his eyes have the child glue one antler on the top portion and the other antler on the other side above the other eye. Allow to dry. They can put their hands inside of the bags to play with the other reindeer.
Kids Christmas Stationary:
Items needed would be one standard sized paper, small Christmas foam cut-outs, and one child safe green ink stamper, and one child safe red ink stamper.
Simply have the ink stampers handy with the Christmas cut-outs easy for the child to reach. Remember to have the child leave the center of the paper white so that they can write a Christmas greeting. Have the child lightly press the foam cut-outs into one color of the ink pads, never mix colors, then have them lightly press onto the edges of the white paper. Allow time to dry. After this have them continue in the other color. Again, allow to dry. They have created a wonderful piece of Christmas stationary.
