Dog breed facts: American Bandogge Mastiff

The American Bandogge Mastiff, also known as simply the American Bandogge, is an impressive and athletic animal. The breed was created by the mating of Neopolitan Mastiffs with American Pit Bulls. Typically, the male is the Pit Bull and the female is the Mastiff. This ensures that the puppies won't be too large for the mother to carry and deliver, since the Mastiff is such a massive animal. This breed was originally bred to be a protector for their families and property and still excel in this area. They are also kept today as household pets and companion dogs.

Today, this breed is accepted for registry in the ACHC, the DDKC, and the DRA. They are classified under the "mastiff" dog category. Although having a registered dog may not mean that much to the average pet owner who is only looking for a loving companion, it does increase the monetary value of the dog for those who want to breed the animal or compete with him or her.

According to breed standards, the American Bandogge Mastiff should be between 23 and 29 inches tall, when measured from the ground to the withers, with males being larger than females. Their weight should be between 85 and 140 pounds. The breed has a well-muscled and nicely proportioned body. The triangular ears are held in the upright, pricked position and are placed rather far apart. The lips have the overhanging flews that all bulldog type breeds share in common. The nose is black in color with large nostrils. The jaw is strong and the muzzle is slightly pushed back. The eyes are widely set, holding an expression of sensitivity and that tired look.

The American Bandogge Mastiff has a short coat. According to breed standards, acceptable coat colors for the breed are black, blue, red, tawny, and brindle. The majority of them are the black brindle coloring. Their grooming is quite easy. A weekly brushing with a stiff, rubber-bristled brush and a shampoo when absolutely needed will suffice. They are medium shedders.

American Bandogge Mastiff are highly intelligent dogs and can be trained quickly, as long as there is good human to canine communication. Training must be consistent, with the human establishing his or her position as "pack leader" from the start. The size of the dog alone makes it essential that this dog is not allowed to become alpha over the humans. They can also become dog aggressive if not properly socialized. If you are firm, consistent and calm, the dog will respond well to training and learn quickly.

The American Bandogge Mastiff is a dog that will do well as either a city dog or a country. They do fine living in apartments even, as long as they have sufficient exercise. They must have at least a brisk walk daily and some time for running and playing off the leash. This breed should be kept stimulated, both mentally and physically, to prevent them from becoming bored, which can lead to some very undesirable behaviors. They love being with their family and friends, and tend to do fine with both children and other animals, as long as they are well-trained and socialized.

They are excellent watch dogs, being very loyal to their families. They will also guard the family fearlessly. This is not to imply that they are aggressive, only that they are quite willing and entirely able to protect. They are affectionate and loving, as well as charming and playful once they feel comfortable with someone. The breed is docile, but only when it is not necessary to do their job. The average life expectancy of the American Bandogge Mastiff is around 10 years.
