Most householders are faced with the daily grind of school and work. Sometimes, many have to deal with varied hours of returning to the nest. After a stressful and challenging day away from home; the idea of preparing menus and cooking can be a "drag" to to everyone involved. Yes, it is easy to grab ready-made food on the road. However, we all know that these meals most times are loaded with excessive amounts of sodium and sugar. Moreover, this practice could be very costly and take a large chunk out of the family's budget.
Cooking should be a delightful activity for the entire family. The activity of cooking will create a stronger bond. In addition, it is very reassuring to know that you have control over what your family members consume on a daily basis. You are in charge of the ingredients and tastes of each dish. In order to to make cooking a fun family activity, the following tips are great to practice so as to get each member involved:
PLANT A GARDEN
One way to create fun is to grow your own vegetables, herbs and fruits. At least, you will be cognizant of how you grow some of your produces. Take a trip to garden store. Have each member of the family choose their own produce, like tomatoes, basil, etc. Kids enjoy when they have a hand in making decisions on what they consume. Studies have shown that they will eat more knowing that they had a hand in growing same.
VISIT A FARM
Have the entire family visit a fruit or vegetable farm. Just the mere sight of all the colorful produces will get them excited. Everyone will gather great knowledge and appreciation of the source of the foods that enter the family's kitchen.
PLAN WEEKLY MENU AND SHOP TOGETHER
Make it a fun chore by having members of the family in the decision making process of planning the meals of the week. Moreover, everyone could participate in making the food list. Then, make it a fun event by visiting the store, fishmonger and the farmer's market. These trips could also be a learning experience for the kids by teaching them how to read labels. They will ultimately develop a sense of pride knowing that they took part in this fun chore.
BE CREATIVE
Children become bored with food easily. So as to get them running to the kitch and table, have them assist you in the kitchen. They could assist with the preparation of simple meals or snacks by incorporating cookie cutters to shape whole wheat bread, etc. Have them make popcicles from fresh fruits.
Do make meals that are kids'-friendly. For instance, if you are making meatballs and sauce; you could have them roll these for the sauce. And, mom or dad could make a special drink. Again, you could have them get involved by setting the table at each meal. Perhaps, you could practice the habit of playing low background music during the cooking and preparation of meals. That should set a happy tone. Another way to get everyone intimately involved and happy would be to have each member of the family relate something fun that occurred during the day.
Cooking for your loved-ones, shows that you care. Although cooking is a chore; it can be a fun activity for all. It takes a little time and creativity to make a simple meal into a fun and enjoyable experience. Incorporating the above tips and more will have your entire family racing to the kitchen to participate.
