Magic the Gathering card analysis: Tarox Bladewing

"Tarox Bladewing" is a 4/3 legendary red dragon printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." Like many of the legendary creatures printed in the Future Sight expansion set, Tarox Bladewing does have this one specific ability. So far, it seems that Tarox Bladewing could be used in a red dragon deck or an aggressive red deck in general.

The converted mana cost of Tarox Bladewing is five. You are going to need three red mana and two colorless mana to bring Tarox Bladewing onto the battlefield. For what Tarox Bladewing, the mana cost seems to be pretty worth it if you plan on playing aggressively. Keep in mind that Tarox Bladewing is a legendary creature and is subject to the "legendary rule." Should there be at least two cards on the battlefield named Tarox Bladewing, they both get sent to the graveyard.

What does Tarox Bladewing do in the first place?

The first ability is Flying. Should you attack with Tarox Bladewing as your opponent has no creatures with Flying or Reach, then s/he is taking four points of combat damage. But, that is not the only ability that Tarox Bladewing possesses.

The second ability is Haste. As soon as Tarox Bladewing enters the battlefield, you can attack with it. It means that Tarox Bladewing is unaffected by summoning sickness. This is an invaluable ability to have in a creature that is being played in an aggressive and offensive deck. This is not the main ability of Tarox Bladewing.

Like many of the other legendary creatures in Future Sight, Tarox Bladewing has Grandeur. Grandeur works is when one legendary creature is on the battlefield and the other of the same name is in your hand. You simply discard the one that is in your hand. By discarding the other Tarox Bladewing, the Tarox Bladewing that is already on the battlefield will get +X/+X until the end of the turn. In this respect, Tarox Bladewing would be an 8/7 with Flying and Haste.

In this respect, this is a good way to shave off a good portion of your opponents life points. In an extended format, you can combine this with "Rage Reflection" and "Crucible of Fire." Crucible of Fire gives your dragons +3/+3 as long as it remains on the battlefield. As soon as Tarox Bladewing enters the battlefield, it will be a 7/6 creature. Rage Reflection gives your creatures Double Strike.

In this respect, Tarox Bladewing would get +3/+3 and Double Strike with those two cards on the battlefield on top of the abilities of Flying and Haste that it already has. Without the Grandeur ability, Tarox Bladewing could deal fourteen points of damage. With the Grandeur ability, you could very much take out your opponent in one attack.

Overall, Tarox Bladewing seems to be an interesting card to have for the most part. In any aggressive deck that is using red creatures, Tarox Bladewing seems to be a good candidate. With red cards such as Rage Reflection and Crucible of Fire on the battlefield to help out, you can decimate an opponent with Tarox Bladewing.
