Magic the Gathering card analysis: Thunderblade Charge

Created on: November 08, 2009

"Thunderblade Charge" is a red sorcery spell printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." From the printed text, it would look as if Thunderblade Charge is a sorcery spell that seems to be worth putting in a red shock and burn deck. In that case, one would definitely get a lot of play out of the Thunderblade Charge.

The converted mana cost for Thunderblade Charge is three. You are going to need two red mana and one colorless mana to play Thunderblade Charge. For what Thunderblade Charge can do, the converted mana cost seems to be worth it. Keep in mind that this is a sorcery spell. It means that Thunderblade Charge can only be played during your turn.

What does Thunderblade Charge do in the first place?

When Thunderblade Charge is cast, you deal three points of damage to a target creature or player. You can even use this ability to take out planeswalkers should they be on the battlefield. However, there are plenty that would contest to Thunderblade Charge. There are low costing instant spells capable of dealing three points of damage.

"Lightning Bolt" which costs one red mana deals three points of damage to a target creature or player. "Incinerate" costs one red mana and one colorless mana to deal three points of damage to a target creature or player. However, creatures destroyed by Incinerate cannot be regenerated.

However, this is not the only ability of Thunderblade Charge. When it gets sent to the graveyard, you can use Thunderblade Charge again. That is provided if the certain conditions are met. The first condition is that you need to be able to deal combat damage to your opponents. Should you be able to do that, you can pay three red mana and two colorless mana. Doing so lets you play Thunderblade Charge without paying its mana cost.

So far, nothing was said about Thunderblade Charge having to be Exiled from the game afterwards. In this respect, Thunderblade Charge gets sent to the graveyard again. Next turn, you get to do the process again if you manage to deal combat damage. Unless an opponent manages to Exile your graveyard, you can keep using Thunderblade Charge over and over again as long as you are dealing combat damage.

Even if Thunderblade Charge gets countered, you can still play it provided you deal combat damage.

Overall, Thunderblade Charge is a great card to have in a red shock and burn deck. The main ability allows you to keep using Thunderblade Charge over and over again. Being able to use a spell that deals direct damage over and over again is a good thing to have.
