Magic the Gathering card analysis: Take Possession

by Can Tran

Created on: November 08, 2009

"Take Possession" is a blue enchantment printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." It is an enchantment spell one would want to use in a control deck with blue cards. This is a card that is somewhat on par with cards such as "Control Magic," "Mind Control," "Persuasion," and "Dominate." However, Take Possession does offer some goodies that the previously listed spells do not.

The converted mana cost for Take Possession is seven. You are going to need two blue mana and five colorless mana to play Take Possession. For what Take Possession can do, the seven mana cost is well worth it. Keep in mind that Take Possession is an enchantment spell. It means that Take Possession is susceptible to anything and everything that affects enchantments.

What does Take Possession do in the first place?

The first ability is Split Second. When you play Take Possession, opponents cannot do anything about it unless they use some sort of mana ability. But, that is simply an added bonus to take possession.

The actual ability of Take Possession lets you enchant a permanent. It can be any permanent: land, enchantment, artifact, creature, or planeswalker. You control the enchanted permanent. Since planeswalkers were not introduced at the time, Take Possession is good to have in the extended format. Take Possession has the same effects of spells like Control Magic and "Steal Artifact." Steal Artifact lets you take possession of an enchanted artifact.

The most appealing part of Take Possession is that you can use it to steal planeswalkers. Being able to do that makes Take Possession quite the interesting card. I was unfortunate enough to have that happen to me one time. During a free-for-all game, I had "Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker" on the battlefield and was ready to use its ultimate ability. My friend went and played Take Possession and picked Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker.

Instead of using the ultimate ability of Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker, my friend used the second ability and started taking possession of my creatures one by one. This is one example on how Take Possession is a very handy enchantment spell. In the case of planeswalkers, you can use Take Possession during your turn right before an opponent can use its ultimate ability during his/her turn.

In this respect, you may not want to waste using Take Possession on a creature or artifact. If you have Take Possession in your hand and your opponent has a planeswalker on the battlefield, go right ahead and steal it. For this reason, Take Possession is quite the handy card to have.
