The Third Part of King Henry the Sixth by William Shakespeare is the third in a series of four historical plays often referred to as "The First Tetralogy". The play deals with the reign of Henry the Sixth, specifically the events surrounding the War of the Roses.
The Third Part of King Henry the Sixth begins with York entering the English throne room. He has with him his sons and supporters who all urge him to take possession of the throne and be made King of England.
Just after York sits in the throne Henry enters with his supporters and challenges York's claim to the crown. Henry eventually concedes York's claim but asks to be allowed to reign during his life time, upon his death the throne will go to the York line. Once back at his castle York is persuaded by his son Richard that the oath he took is not binding since it was not presided over by a magistrate. York announces his intention to wrest the throne from Henry by force. Margaret's army arrives and commences battle with the house of York.
York's forces are outnumbered. Clifford kills York's young son, Rutland, and when York himself is captured Queen Margaret taunts him with a handkerchief dipped in the boy's blood. York bitterly admonishes Margaret and Clifford for being so heartless as to kill an innocent child. His words move some of his sworn enemies to pity but Margaret and Clifford are without sympathy and stab York to death.
While awaiting news of their father York's sons see what appears to be three suns in the sky. Edward believes this is a sign that the sons of York should join together to achieve glory.
News of York's death reaches his sons. Richard vows to have revenge upon Clifford. Warwick arrives and a retaliation is initiated.
Henry arrives in York and is urged by Clifford to make Prince Edward heir to the throne once more. Henry replies that a kingship is an
