Many college students these days are forced to balance their school work with a job. I choose not to for one simple reason: school is my job. It's a 7-days-a-week, round-the-clock career in which deadlines are final and excuses are unacceptable. Balancing homework and study sessions for around 16 credit hours worth of classes is a time-consuming operation, as well as the most important task most college students must contend with in their daily lives.
A student is expected to spend around 3 hours studying for every hour in the classroom, which adds up to nearly (if not more than) 60 hours a week, and that's assuming a bare-bones course load. Add in time spent on extra curricular activities, and there's barely enough time left for eating and sleeping. Weekends, rather than providing opportunities to relax or to put in a couple of hours at a job, are now a much-needed frame of time in which to catch up on all the study and homework that couldn't be gotten to in the previous week.
With all the demands made on time, efficiency, and dedication, there simply isn't enough left to take on the extra hassle of a part-time job.
