Why we care so much about celebrities

What is a celebrity? Someone who is in the limelight frequently? Maybe it's a Hollywood actor, fashion designer, singer, or reality star perhaps. Celebrities have become a part of our way of life. There are countless magazines to prove it. People, Ok!, and Us Weekly are among them. If we didn't care so much about celebrities, then these publications would be out of business. Don't forget about the entertainment news shows that are out there too. Cable television has a channel completely devoted to the celebrity.

There are a few reasons we care about celebrities. The main reason being, that people like to live vicariously through them. What percentage of the world actually have paparazzi after them, live in Malibu mansions, and take vacations on the French Riviera...not a large percentage. So we pretend that we are them. We daydream about what it would be like to have a stylist at our beckoned call to fix us up for the award ceremony that night, or the worldwide press tour for our upcoming blockbuster movie. Who doesn't want to feel glamorous? Designer gowns, Harry Winston jewels, Christian Louboutin shoes with their trademark red sole. All eyes are on you, the celebrity.

Then there is the couple's news. Who's dating who? Who broke up? Who got back together? Why do we care? Well, why did we care in high school? Maybe people just don't grow up. Maybe the celebrity world is our high school. People like to be nosy, have an opinion, and gossip. What safer way to do it then to care about people that you don't know and probably are never going to meet.

The latest in the celebrity definition is the reality star. It's your neighbor or perchance your friend, who decided to broadcast a portion of their life, or maybe even all of their life to the world. Their reality may be a tad bit closer to our reality. We care about the reality celebrity because somehow we can relate to them.

Ah, but yes. We care about celebrities because walking down Main Street, somewhere in suburbia, there is a mom of two maybe three. Her hair is pulled back in a pony tail because she didn't have time to take a shower that morning never mind put on make-up. She stops at a store front window to read the latest headline of People, Celebrity Beauty Secrets. She sighs because she knows she'll never have time to use these beauty secrets, but at least she can pretend she's a celebrity mom like Katie Holmes or Angelina Jolie. She can daydream, can't she?
