I had began playing magic the gathering around the time that the elder dragon legends came out and I remember a few sad attempts to use them in decks until I realized just how difficult they are to play, and yet every time I see a dragon legend I can not help but to draw back to those days, even if that dragon has very little to do with the legendary dragons of the past.
Tarox Bloodwing is a rare legendary dragon from the future sight expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs two colorless mana and three red mana to put into play and is a 4/3 flying, haste creature with grandeur.
Grandeur is the ability on this card that makes it the most interesting because while putting out a 4/3 flying creature on the fifth turn is interesting this isn't the most powerful of abilities, but if you are playing with four copies of this legend there is a good chance you will find another copy of that card. The grandeur ability reads "Grandeur - Discard another card named Tarox Bladewing: Tarox Bladewing gets +X/+X until end of turn, where X is its power."
The main point of grandeur is to allow you to play with four copies of a good legend in your deck, and it will do this because with this ability not only do you not mind getting the second or third Tarox Bladewing in your hand but you really want to do so.
The first thing that is worth noting is that there is no cost to playing this ability beyond discarding the card. This means that you could easily use this on the turn that you put tarox bladewing into play getting the extra four damage, or at any later time without needing to worry about mana.
The next point is that it does not give you a simple +4/+4, it is based on the power of the creature, this means if you were to use equipment on this creature, or giant growth, or bloodlust or anything else to increase its power before you used the grandeur ability it could become far better. For example by simply casting bloodlust, a card in the same color, you would end up with a 16/9 flying creature. And if that doesn't alter the landscape of the game not much else will. So if you can afford four of these in an aggressive red that uses a few creature pumps already they are going to be useful.
