The Atlas Terrier is a small to medium sized dog with nothing small nor average about their personality. This is a great dog breed for people who love to have fun and want to do so with a canine companion by their side. This breed is very similar, and has some of its roots in, the Jack Russell Terrier, a popular dog with a different coloration standard than the Atlas Terrier. The breed was created by the mating of various terriers, some multi-colored and some of only one solid color. They are used for several purposes, including as hunting dogs and watch dogs, but are also wonderfully suited to being the family pet or companion dog.
Today, this breed is accepted for registry in the ATA, the FCI, the ACR, the APRI, and the DRA. They are classified under the "terrier" dog category. Although having a registered dog may not mean that much to the average pet owner who is only looking for a loving companion, it does increase the monetary value of the dog for those who want to breed the animal or compete with him or her.
According to breed standards, the Atlas Terrier should be between 9 and 15 inches tall, when measured from the ground to the withers and their weight should be between 6 and 18 pounds. There are three categories that the dog will fit into one of, depending on the size. These are: toy, mini, and standard. The Atlas Terrier has an athletic and nicely proportioned body. The ears are held in the flopped over position, shaped in a "V". The eyes are almond shaped, and can come in a wide array of colors depending primarily on the coat color. They hold an expression of alertness and sensitivity. When left natural, the tail is tapered and held in the downward position when the dog is at rest, but it can also be docked.
The Atlas Terrier may have a either a rough coat or a smooth coat. According to breed standards, acceptable coat colors arealmost unlimited, including both solid and multi coat colors. There cannot, however, be more than 15 percent of the coat that is white. Both coat types will lay flat against the body. Their grooming is quite easy. A weekly thorough brushing with a stiff, rubber-bristled brush and a shampoo when needed will suffice. This will help to remove some of the loose hair and ensure that nothing is stuck in the fur. The breed are medium shedders.
They are highly intelligent dogs and can be trained quickly, as they want to please and are excited about learning. Training must be consistent, with the human establishing his or her position
