When the Lawyer asked Jesus what he needed to do to inherit the kingdom of God, Jesus said," Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all they heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself." (Luke 10:27). The lawyer was not willing to do this as many down through the ages were not.
What it comes down to is our willingness to accept Christ as our Savior and our Lord and being willing to put ourselves, our desires, and our needs last and Jesus' will for our lives first. The lawyer knew the law from the time he was a child, he practiced and obeyed as much as humanly possible, but he was lacking in his love for others. He recognized Jesus as a master-teacher, and as knowledgeable in spiritual things, but did not recognize Him as God or as Lord of his life.
Many Christians have repented and accepted Jesus as their Savior, but figure they are in the door now and they don't have to do anything else, they can relax and take life easy. This is not what Jesus wants for your life any more than you would want your children to stay in your house and let you support them for the rest of their lives. They are in the family; after all, they don't really have to do anything else.
If you are truly a born-again believer and have accepted Jesus as your Savior; you have a hunger to be in a living relationship with Him. You will want to know everything about Him and will seek to please Him in everything you do. Studying the Word is first and foremost in a young Christian's life - to desire the milk of the word - to grow and mature as a child of the King. Being in a Bible-believing church and to fellowship with other Christians will help you mature and learn more about your Lord.
This is not always as easy as it looks because there are many temptations and even more false teachings that will come to make you stumble and discourage you along the way. You will more than likely be dropped by your old friends and even relatives if they are not Christians; but keep your eyes focused on the things of the Lord and you will know what is important and what is not. Pleasing the Lord in your life is a choice, it takes studying and courage to stay on the narrow path. There are times when you will be tempted or discouraged, but the Lord will pick you up and bring you back to Him each time that happens.
In conclusion, if you are His child and are putting the things of God first in your life for no other reason but that you love Him and are seeking to do His will; you cannot fail to please Him.
