Training your dog yourself

In reality you have been training your dog yourself from the first day you brought him home. Obedience training is just another step in teaching your dog what he needs to know. However there are a few requirements before you get started and that is to get informed. Read all you can on dog training and take from it exactly what you want to train your own dog. Another important aspect to dog training is to have the ability to train your dog with him knowing you are the leader of the pack, without a doubt. This can be shown more in your actions than in words.

There are two main types of training and you have to choose the one that applies to you and your dog. The most common training is obedience while there are other owners that use behavior training. Both can be combined but it is best to address one at a time. It is important to concentrate on one part of the training first. The main obedience training that's required is the come, sit, and stay commands. You and your dog have to be in the proper mind set for this to work so try and make it fun for both of you. Try to make your training periods short so your dog doesn't lose interest. You can repeat a five to ten minute training session two to three times a day with long breaks in between.

The stay command

The first thing you'll need in your training is your dog's attention. Once you have made eye contact with your dog give the command stay in a loud clear voice. Walk away from your dog and see if he stays in the same place you left him. If he has stayed reward him with a treat and lots of praise. If he hasn't return him to the point you left him and start over. It won't take long for him to realize he has to stay in that position. Once you have the stay command in place and feel confident that your dog will now stay when told you can move on to the come command.

The come command

The come command may be one of the most important lessons your dog will ever learn. Start by making your dog stay in the position you want him in. he knows by now he has to stay there. When you get so far away from him turn and in a loud clear voice say come. This is a new command and he may not react instantly at first. If he is not responding slap your leg and repeat the command. It won't take long before he knows the meaning of come. Repeat this exercise as many times that's required until your dog reacts instantly to the word come. By teaching your dog this command you are saving his life. This can get your dog out of dangerous
