Reasons to write about topics you know nothing about

It is easy to understand why writers are tempted to stick with writing about topics with which they are familiar, about which they know a lot or have considerable experience. It makes for easy, quick writing. On the other hand, not venturing out to explore other areas and writing topics can be incredibly limiting. It is crucial for writers to grow, and it is hard to do that unless you are willing to learn.

Here is a look at some of the best reasons for which a writer should write about a wide range of topics.

*Broadens writing portfolio -

The more varied the topics about which one writes, the broader their portfolio will be. That will look good to publishers, and it will also give a writer the exposure that they might not otherwise get.

*Expanding the focus -

Some areas don't generate much traffic. Consequently, a writer will get very little exposure if they confine all of their writing to that or a select few areas. Expanding one's focus as a writer challenges a writer to learn how to write differently.

*Developing better research skills -

Exposure to different areas will inevitably require that writers do research. When a writer is challenged to do research in a field about which they know little to nothing, they are forced to dig deeper to find the best information. This will definitely improve research skills, and in the process, it may make future research more efficient and less time consuming.

*The opportunity to learn about completely new and different things -

All writers will always benefit from every possible opportunity to learn new things. After learning about new things, a writer is forced to assimilate that new knowledge in order to write about it in a fashion that will make it understandable for others. It can be quite challenging to have to try to explain and articulate something that one might not necessarily understand all that well themselves.

*The opportunity to improve as a writer -

Writers are all too aware of how challenging it can be to try to write about things about which they may have little to no knowledge. An effective writer can take that new knowledge and turn it into an interesting article that is easy to read and easily understandable. The more a writer forces themselves or challenges themselves to do that, the more their writing will improve, and those improvements will happen much faster than they would otherwise.

A writer who truly loves to write will be eager to seize the opportunity to write about pretty much anything, whether it is familiar or not. The more varied a writer's portfolio becomes, the easier it will be to expand that versatility. A writer who sticks to their own area of expertise is depriving themselves of some great challenges, and of the opportunity to grow as a writer, a researcher and personally. That doesn't mean that it would be wise to avoid writing to topics that are related to their area of expertise: that would be foolhardy. It simply means that it is very healthy and very important for a writer to go beyond that comfort zone and to seize the opportunity to write to topics about which they know relatively little.
