Poetry: What I'm thankful for

I'm thankful I woke up today, and saw the sunshine rise,
I'm thankful for the pleasures that beheld my sleepy eyes.
I'm thankful for the children's smiles, the laughter and the tears,
And for the many memories created through the years.

I'm thankful for the food we eat, the clothing that we wear,
I'm thankful that I earn my crust, and have a bit to spare.
I'm thankful I can do my part to help those much less able,

To have fresh water, food and drink to put upon their table.

I'm thankful for the leaves that fill the pathway, all in gold,
For memories and sharing them, the thrill in what I'm told,
I'm thankful for the warm hearth fire, the logs which sit in wait,
For the flames to die and take their turn to warm the homely grate.

I'm thankful for the family, and neighbors that I know,
For the little puppy we took in and the thrill to watch him grow.
I'm thankful for the muddy floors where naughty kids have trodden,
With smiling faces every one, and playclothes always sodden.

I'm thankful they remind me that life's value comes from fun,
Not who you are, or what you have when all is said and done.
I'm thankful for their cheeky smiles, and the latest game on Wii,
That brings amusement to their eyes, as they make fun of me.

I'm thankful for the turkey which turned out a little dry,
And for the curiosity which makes me question why.
I'm thankful for the graciousness of those who eat my cooking,
And of how they all ignore my faults, pretending they're not looking.

I'm thankful for the chance to sit relaxing in my chair,
For all the fun of holidays which show how much we care.
For grandma's moods, and teenage broods, for simply being here,
To share a reminiscent time with everyone who's dear.

Though most of all I'm thankful for the sun, the stars, the sky,
The trees and flowers, the harvest time, and all the days gone by.
For in those days, and on the path this lifetime has been trod,
I found my thankfulness repaid a million times by God.
