Everybody loves a pony and the American Shetland Pony is no exception! The American Shetland is an americanized version of the more traditional European Shetland. Founded in 1888, The American Shetland Pony Registry was created to track the European Shetlands being imported to the US. The registry now consists of four different groups, the Classic American Shetland, the Modern American Shetland, The American Miniature and the American Show Pony. The American Shetland consists of ponies in the first two groups, the Classic American Shetland and the Modern American Shetland.

The American Shetland Pony isn't just adorable, it's also a very hardy breed. These ponies have very strong hooves, a sturdy build and the stamina of a horse much larger than it is. The Classic American Shetland links more closely to it's roots, it originated in the Shetland Islands around the ninth century. Throughout the years the pony has been a pet to royalty and a cart pony in coal mines their willingness and versatility makes them the perfect horse for many types of work, especially as a child's mount. The Modern Shetland Pony is a much flashier, more animated version of it's Classic cousin. The breed was cross bred to breeds like the Caspian and Hackney, creating a beautiful moving refined pony. Both the Classic and Modern made good children's mounts, but for very different reasons.

The Classic Shetland excels at many disciplines. Originally bred to be a carriage pony, they make ideal ponies for beginners and despite their size can pull a heavy payload. The Classic American Shetland also makes an honest and kind first horse for any young child, when trained correctly they easily become any young child's best and most trusted friend. They are more commonly seen in the English rings and take well to lead line classes and short stirrup. The Modern Shetland Pony is a more complicated pony and requires a more advanced rider, but with the right child this pony can win in any class. They are quick and agile giving them an advantage in children's jumpers, cross country and gymkhanas. The Modern American Shetland also makes a beautiful carriage horse because of their high action movement.

The American Shetland Pony is a reliable mount and driving pony who require the most straightforward of care because of their origins as a moor pony. They are one of the most hardy of pony breeds and also the most trustworthy for small children and adults alike. Despite their small size they can be enjoyed by anyone because of their versatility as both a riding and driving pony.
