Literary characters: Mike Newton, New Moon

New Moon, the sequel to Stephanie Meyer's bestselling book Twilight, continues to feature several key supporting characters including Mike Newton. First introduced in chapter one of Twilight, Mike was an average American high school kid, clean-cut, friendly and anxious to win the affections of the pretty, new female student Bella Swan. In New Moon, Mike's character retains many of its original characteristics, undergoing only a few minor evolutions.

Although primarily a secondary character in New Moon, the character of Mike Newton continues to play an important role in the epic, romantic saga between teenager Bella Swan and the vampire Edward Cullen. Like the first book, the action in New Moon is set in the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State in the small town of Forks. We originally met many of the supporting characters, including Mike, when Bella began her enrollment at Forks High School.

The interactions between Bella and Mike, Bella and Edward, and Mike and Edward in the first book have a direct bearing on how the characters react and behave in the second. For example, it is established in Twilight that Mike Newton is infatuated with Bella despite her repeated rejection of his affections. She encourages him to turn his attentions to Jessica Stanley, and he does. However, despite the redirection of Mike's interests, he remains a consistent character. He may back off from his obvious attempts to woo Bella but at heart, he is still interested and jealous of the attention she receives from other guys, especially Edward.

In the first book, Mike's physical characteristics contrasted the beauty of the vampire Edward. Mike was described as baby-faced with pale, blond hair that he wore in orderly spikes. In New Moon, Bella observes that Mike has made a few grooming changes over the summer. He is now wearing his hair not so neat and more mussed like Edwards tousled, casual style. He has lost some of the rounded, baby face look also. In addition to his maturing physical features, his emotional maturity also seems to have grown. It is not major, but he is no longer acting glum to see Bella with Edward. It is as if he resigned himself to the fact that Bella made her choice. If he wants to be a part of her life, he will have to settle being her friend.

New Moon is a book filled with strong emotions and extreme situations. Like the first book in the series, the supporting characters like Mike Newton do not have a direct bearing on the central actions but their
