As soon as your vet places a bottle of pills in your hand for your dog your mind tends to warp a little. You are no longer concentrating on what your vet is saying as your mind is jumping ahead trying to figure out how you are going to get three fair sized pills into your dog on a daily bases for the next ten days. For those of you that have never encountered this task it can be a bit foreboding but like me you'll soon find out it is not quite as difficult as you thought. There are many ways to get your dog to take his medication with very little trouble.
Stay calm
The main thing to giving your dog medication is by staying calm. You already know how well your furry companion picks up on your mood. There are many foods that you can disguise the pill in and if you have to utilize every one of them don't hesitate to do so. The most important thing is that the medication gets inside your dog to do the work it was intended to do. Try to make the experience of taking medication a positive one for your dog. The rewards will pay off big time in the future if the need arises.
Food disguises
Pill medication is perhaps the easiest form of medication to give your dog. The pill can be hidden in any type of soft food that your dog enjoys. A chunk of cooked beef will certainly get the results you're looking for. Just push the pill inside of the meat and he will only be too happy to gobble it down. The treat has to be soft in order to disguise the pill but this will work like a charm if the pill is covered up well enough. Any food treat that your dog likes can be tried to cover up a pill. Check with your vet first as some dairy products can interfere with the strength of the pill and what it is suppose to do. Without these restrictions any food is fair game.
Pill pockets
Don't leave your vets office without these. I found that these wonderful things are worth every penny you have to spend. The pill pocket is small treats that can be used to hide the pill inside their hollow center. All you have to do is place the pill in one side and use another pocket to cover the other end. The best part of pill pockets is that they are very tasty to dogs and well accepted.
Liquid medication
Perhaps liquid medication is the hardest type of medication to give your dog. Mixing it with food will sometimes work but your dog
