Travel guide: Land's End,Cornwall

Its one of the furthest extremes of the UK and a must visit location for visitors to the UK; Land's End is one of the unusual looking, and moodiest (weather wise) locations in England. In the height of the summer months Lands End could arguably be one of the most beautiful locations on the planet, during the late autumn and winter months you can get a great idea of what Hell on Earth would look like.

I lived just down the road (well about 20 miles) in the beautiful village location of Lelant, a location that looks beautiful even when the worst weather hits it. And in my numerous visits to Lands End I only ever saw good weather there once, despite the time of year. This final protruding point of the UK see's some of the most ferocious seas chopping into its landscape.

I cant say that Lands End from a feeling perspective is the most enticing place, the weather I believe plays a big part in this, but the most unusual thing is that there feels like there is something beneath the surface. I'm not talking water I'm talking atmosphere, the only way I can describe it is in that awful feeling you get when you go somewhere that you know something bad has happened. And I know I'm not alone in that thought. On one visit to Lands End we went with a couple of practising Christians and to use their words it's like God hates it here!

I'm not trying to be too negative about Lands End, in fact I believe its these very factors that make Lands End such a popular tourist attraction. Its an extraordinary location because standing at the most extreme point and looking out across the water towards the lighthouse (on a good day you can see the Isles Of Scilly) you can see all aspects of weather at once on some days, from the grey wintery looking feel of snow, to the beauty of summer; even in winter.

Lands End is incredibly isolated and certainly not a location you would want to live in, the nearest villages offer little other than drinking in the way of entertainment. The nearest town St. Just has just a scattering of shops, you'll need to travel nearly 20 miles to Penzance in order to have any resemblance of a normal life. There are of course things to do at Lands End other than look out over water. With a farm, small shopping village, hotel, public house, and Doctor Who exhibition there is enough to keep you entertained. Beyond that though there are beautiful walks along cliffs where you can observe assorted wildlife, and basking sharks in the sea. The rugged cliff face offers children unlimited visions for their imagination, from human faces to monsters the rock face offers great entertainment for kids.

The biggest piece of advise I have for a potential visitor is to take all weather gear, because no matter how good the weather is just a few miles down the road you can guarantee you'll see more changes in weather than you ever expected.
