Magic: The Gathering card analysis: Chandra Ablaze

"Chandra Ablaze" is a red planeswalker printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Zendikar." Chandra Ablaze is simply a new version of "Chandra Nalaar" which originally was printed in the "Lorwyn" expansion set. It would be reprinted as a mythic rare for "Duel Decks: Jace vs. Chandra" and "Magic 2010." In this respect, Chandra Ablaze is like "Ajani Vengeant" in "Shards of Alara." Ajani Vengeant is simply a new version of the white planeswalker "Ajani Goldmane."

The converted mana cost for Chandra Ablaze is six. You will need two red mana and four colorless mana to bring Chandra Ablaze from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Chandra Ablaze can do, the six mana is well worth the cost. While planeswalkers are different than creatures, they are still subject to the "legendary rule." Should there be two cards on the battlefield named Chandra Ablaze, they both get sent to the graveyard. Also, do not put Chandra Ablaze and Chandra Nalaar on the battlefield at the same time. The legendary rule kicks in as well.

What does Chandra Ablaze do in the first place?

Chandra Ablaze starts off with five loyalty counters. When it has no more loyalty counters left, Chandra Ablaze gets sent to the graveyard. Spells and abilities that deal damage will reduce loyalty counters. Combat damage will also reduce loyalty counters. Like other planeswalkers, Chandra Ablaze has three abilities. The third one is the ultimate ability.

The first ability puts a loyalty counter on Chandra Ablaze. Doing so lets you discard a card from your hand. If it is a red card, you get to deal four points of damage to a target creature or player. This ability is great for getting rid of creatures and planeswalkers. Since planeswalkers act as other players, you can use this ability to go after them. Four points of damage would equal a reduction of four loyalty counters from those planeswalkers. This is enough to get rid of planeswalkers such as "Sarkhan Vol."

The second ability subtracts two loyalty counters from Chandra Ablaze. Doing so causes each player to discard two cards from his/her hand and draw three cards. In this respect, it is iffy if you want to use this ability. While this could help out for the third ability, you risk giving your opponents the card advantage. You do not want to give your opponents the card advantage. One should play a red and black deck if this is the case with "Megrim" and "Underworld Dreams." Megrim deals two points of damage to your
