Online games and the fun factor

Online gaming has never been so popular. From young children, to teenagers and even to adults, every age group participates in online-gaming. This begs the question of "why". The answer to that question may be extremely simple, online-gaming is fun. The only reason we play games are for fun, and maybe certain educational reasons.

Given online-gaming's popularity, we can safely say that online-gaming is fun, and perhaps much more than that. If we take a closer look at the fun factors in online-gaming, we will find different types of fun in the vast sea that is the online gaming world.

When we think of fun, we will think about activities that induce pleasure. This pleasure is what some online-games offer through humor, easy games that will sting your imagination, or satisfy certain desires of blowing up aliens. These are the most commonly found games on the internet, they range from arcade games, shooting games, adventure games or puzzles games. All of these games offer quick enjoyment with little worry and much pleasure, because of the relative shortness of these games, they are free and don't require lengthy downloads.

A different version of "Fun" games, are games that offer the possibility to pit yourself against other players, which is the core of the more popular games online. The multiplayer options of the internet, has allowed games to connect players, and create a competitive atmosphere that can be coupled with virtual awards, prizes, high scores and online prestige. This fun, is more competitive and less casual and relaxed than the first one. Such games include first-person shooters, real-time strategy, turn-based strategy, multiplayer role-playing games, etc.

Another "fun" in online games which also relies on multiplayer, are those games that rely on a vast community in which competition is not the main idea, as it is rather cooperation and interaction. These games simulate interaction between members of a community, whether by offering various multiplayer mini-games to a community of players, or to allow the evolution of a player's avatar so it ca interact with other players. Such examples for these types of games include, Half-Life, imvu, Farmville, etc.

Often, online-games will have an incentive "demo" for you to play, and the full-version will be available if you pay a certain amount every month. The growing numbers of players that buy these memberships, show that the fun of online-gaming is something that players are willing to pay for.

Whether you prefer faster paced and competitive games, or slower and more casual ways of online play, there is a game for every taste. Whether you like online-games or not, they are undeniably fun, and they are here to stay.
