The Banter Bulldogge is a powerful and athletic dog that can be attributed to the breeding work of Mr. Todd Tripp. They are a new breed, only being developed as far back as the 1990s. Their breeding began in the North American state of Ohio, in the hopes of recreating the Brabanter Bullenbeisser, a Belgian breed from the 1700s . The breed was created with the mating of various bulldogs and boxers together. They are used for several purposes, those being weight pulling, guarding, hunting, as well as for being the family pet or companion dog.
Today, this breed is accepted for registry in the IOEBA, the APRI, and the DRA. They are classified under the "working" dog category. Although having a registered dog may not mean that much to the average pet owner who is only looking for a loving companion, it does increase the monetary value of the dog for those who want to breed the animal or compete with him or her.
According to breed standards, the Banter Bulldogge should be between 20 and 24 inches tall, when measured from the ground to the withers and their weight should be between 50 and 85 pounds. The male of the breed is typically larger than the female. The Banter Bulldogge has a well-muscled and nicely proportioned body. The square head is of good size and fairly wide. The ears are held in the flopped over position, far apart and set high on the head. They are sometimes cropped. The lips are pigmented black. The nose is also black in color and is relatively long. The jaw is strong and hold teeth that meet in an underbite. The eyes are dark and somewhere between a round and an almond shape, with wrinkles over and between them. They hold an expression of intelligence and serious contemplation. When left natural, the tail is tapered and held in the downward position when the dog is at rest, but it can also be docked.
The Banter Bulldogge may have a dark mask on the face. According to breed standards, acceptable coat colors are fawn, black, red, or brindle. The fur is short and smooth. Their grooming is quite easy. A weekly thorough brushing with a stiff, rubber-bristled brush and a shampoo when absolutely needed will suffice. This will help to remove some of the loose hair and ensure that nothing is stuck in the fur. The breed are medium shedders.
They are highly intelligent dogs and can be trained quickly, especially in areas they are instinctively adapted and used for. Training must be consistent, with the human establishing his or her position as "pack leader" from the start. This dog enjoys learning and working, and is quite happy when they know that they have pleased their owner, so high praise and reward is very helpful. They tend to be exceptionally obedient. If you are firm, consistent and calm, the dog will respond well to training and learn quickly.
The Banter Bulldogge is a dog that will do well as either a working dog or a family pet. They will need to be sure that they are given plenty of opportunity to exercise, with at least a brisk walk daily and some time for running off the leash. Although they can be kept in any size home, whether in the country or the city, they do best if they have at least a fenced yard. This is partially because they tend to be very sedate when inside and this can lead to a lazy and overweight dog. They love being with their family, and tend to do fine with both children and other animals.
They are excellent watch dogs, being very loyal to their families and alerting them to any sign of trouble. They will also guard the family fearlessly. They should be well-socialized from an early age. This is not to imply that they are aggressive, only that they have the tendency to be suspicious of new people if they are not used to being around them. They are affectionate and loving, as well as charming and playful once they feel comfortable with someone. The average life expectancy of the Banter Bulldogge is between 12 and 13 years.
