Magic the Gathering card analysis: Scourge of Kher Ridges

"Scourge of Kher Ridges" is a 6/6 red dragon printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." From the looks of it, this is something you may want to put in a red aggressive deck or a five-color dragon deck. So far, it seems to be one of the most interesting dragons to be printed in Magic the Gathering let alone in the Future Sight expansion set. Depending on how you use Scourge of Kher Ridges, you can definitely get some play with it.

The converted mana cost for Scourge of Kher Ridges is eight. You will need two red mana and six colorless mana to bring Scourge of Kher Ridges from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Scourge of Kher Ridges can do, it is debatable on whether or not it is worth paying the mana cost. The thing is, Scourge of Kher Ridges has an expensive mana cost. It is going to take a matter of turns to produce all of that mana needed to bring out Scourge of Kher Ridges. Luckily, there are several ways to bring it out early in the game.

What does Scourge of Kher Ridges do in the first place?

The first ability is Flying. Should you attack with Scourge of Kher Ridges and your opponent has no creatures with Flying or Reach, then s/he is taking six points of combat damage. In a matter of turns, you can beat an opponent simply by attacking with Scourge of Kher Ridges.

The second ability allows you to pay one red mana and one colorless mana. Doing so causes Scourge of Kher Ridges to deal two points of damage to each creature without Flying. So far, you do not have to tap Scourge of Kher Ridges in order to use that ability. You can use the ability as many times as you want as long as you have the necessary mana. In this respect, you can pay two red mana and two colorless mana to have Scourge of Kher Ridges deal four points of damage to each creature without flying. This should clear the board of many 1/1 and 2/2 creatures. If there are some 3/3 or 4/4 creatures on the battlefield, you simply pay the extra red mana and colorless mana.

The third ability lets you pay one red mana and five colorless mana. Doing so causes Scourge of Kher Ridges to deal six points of damage to all creatures with Flying. If you have an opponent with a bunch of Flying creatures, you can use this ability. It is more difficult to defend against Flying creatures rather than creatures without Flying. You would need creatures with Flying or Reach to defend against other Flying creatures. This ability solves the problem with defending against Flying creatures.

If you are playing a dragon-themed deck, you may want to play "Crucible of Fire" to give your dragon creatures +3/+3. You may want to add in "Door of Destinies" and pick the dragon creature type. Let the charge counters build up on Door of Destinies while you cast dragon spells. Then, your dragons would get +1/+1 for each charge counter on Door of Destinies. In this respect, you can safeguard your dragons let alone Scourge of Kher Ridges by using its third ability to wipe the board of Flying creatures.

The one main drawback of Scourge of Kher Ridges is the mana cost. You will need artifacts to help out. Be sure to put in artifacts such as "Sol Ring" and "Thran Dynamo" in your deck. That will produce the needed colorless mana to spend on bringing Scourge of Kher Ridges onto the battlefield. If you are also using green, be sure to add in "Mana Reflection" which doubles the amount of mana produced coming from your sources. If you want to be able to play Scourge of Kher Ridges, you are going to need mana acceleration.
