The literary character, Mike Newton, makes his first appearance in chapter one of Stephanie Meyer's book, Twilight. Twilight is the first book in the four book series of the same name that originally was released in 2005. Although primarily a secondary or supporting character, Mike Newton plays an important role in the epic saga that is the intense romance between teenager Bella Swan and vampire Edward Cullen.
Twilight is set in the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State in the small town of Forks. Many of the book's supporting characters are introduced early as Bella makes her way through her first day at Forks High School. Her first direct encounter with Edward is not good. It takes the cheerful, friendly Mike Newton to make Bella feel welcomed and normal. His personality puts her at ease, as does the fact that he also did not grow up in the cloud-covered town of Forks. Bella may not return Mike's obvious affection, but she does like him as a friend.
The antagonism Mike feels toward Edward Cullen is shown as early as chapter one of Twilight. After the Biology class scene where Edward shows obvious revulsion towards Bella, Mike's comments and reaction assure Bella that there is nothing wrong with her. Mike is quick to call Edward a "weird guy" for acting repulsed towards Bella.
Mike Newton continues his attempt to snare Bella's attention but his young antics make him seem immature when compared to the quiet, brooding Edward. Mike is not immature, simply carefree. This is evident in chapter two as he happily engages in a snowball fight with other students as he and Bella make their way to class. He is a playful guy and enjoys having fun.
The character of Mike is the one that displays the most jealousy towards Bella and the interest Edward shows towards her. Mike is so aware of Bella and any potential competition for her affection, that he is even watching Bella and Edward's interaction during the
