First of all, fitness isn't a fad or trend; it's a way of life. When searching for a fitness center you need to determine your fitness goals. As the number of gyms increase, your options are no longer limited to the local gym with antiquated equipment or the YMCA that everyone in the community utilizes.
What's the right gym for me?
So, what are you looking to accomplish? You're seeking a fitness center but unsure of what you need. How about creating a list of criteria for yourself. Here are a few suggestions:
Do I want to get back into shape, looking to lose some weight or looking to change from my current gym to a new environment? Do I need a variety of physical activities to keep me challenged and interested? Do I want a fitness center dedicated to women only?
These are all things that need to been carefully considered before you enter a gym for a tour or sign on the dotted line.
Ask Questions
You enter the fitness facility and you're approached by a consultant. They begin to ask a million questions but you feel so overwhelmed you lose your train of thought. Remember to be prepared with your list as well. Here are a few questions to consider asking a consultant.
What are your hours? Do you offer classes? Are there certified trainers on staff? Where are your other locations? How old is your equipment? Is there a contract and what are your fees? Do you have daycare?
Of course, these are just a few questions but more will come to mind as you continue your tour. But, you do need to check out the equipment. Make sure the strength training equipment and free weights are easy to use and do not have any broken parts. When looking at cardio machines, make sure they compute ongoing feedback during your training and also are not disabled in any way. Also, make sure to ask what type of equipment they utilize and how often they update it. After a tour, if there's an interest to join, be prepared to sign a contract. Most fitness centers would like to have new members locked in for a year but fees for most gyms are competitive.
Gym Near Home or Work
When it comes to joining a fitness center near work or home depends upon how frequently you tend to visit the gym. Some gym goers prefer a place by there home because its easier to go home and unwind before heading to the gym. Others like the idea of a gym by work so they can visit during a lunch hour. Its always a good idea to join a fitness center that offers multiple locations so you can go to the gym no matter where you are anytime of the day. So, with your criteria and questions ready, go hit the gyms.
