Magic the Gathering card analysis: Scourge of Kher Ridges

It is always a bit sad when you see a magic the gathering card that you would love to be able to play but you can't because of some general flaw, and nine times out of ten that flaw is that it simply costs too much mana to put into play. This is why it is so common for new players or simply people who have not been in a lot of tournaments to build decks with cards that cost seven, eight and even nine mana to play. They are almost always very powerful cards and if you could play them they have the potential of changing the game completely.

Scourge of Kher Ridges is a rare dragon from the Lorwyn expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs two red and six colorless to put into play and is a 6/6 flying creature. This isn't what entices you into the card that that is the next two abilities. The first costs one red and one colorless and lets you do two damage to any creature without flying. This can be used as many times as you need to kill everything on the ground and if you are able to play it should help you win the game.

The second ability costs one red and five colorless and does six damage to all other creatures with flying. This also is very useful since by the time you play this you will have the six mana and should be able to play it.

Again the problem with all of this is that you are playing a red deck and in a tournament you will have either won or lost before this creature can reach the board. But this doesn't mean that this card has no value, simply that in a typical constructed tournament deck it has very little.

In limited this card is far more likely to make it to the board and if it does it is a game winning card. If it is not killed it can quickly wipe out the enemies entire army and even if it is the only creature left it will only take 4 fours to kill the opponent even if they have taken no damage through the entire game.

Another place are multi player games. With more people it is easier for a mage to hide and build up his power and then use this to destroy the armies of everyone at the table and hope you can kill all of them before they can destroy him.
