Biography: Debbie Macomber

One of the most popular authors of all time, Debbie Macomber is an ordinary wife and mother who has the uncanny ability to take her readers into the hearts and minds of her characters, who are also ordinary people with problems just like their own. She was born on October 22, 1948 in Takoma, Washington and all of her books are set in her native state.

The amazing thing about Debbie Macomber as an author is that she is dyslexic and in this regard she is a hero to many who struggle with this condition proving that anything is possible if you have enough determination. With four children at home, she was determined to follow her dream of becoming a writer. She started out on a typewriter that she rented and used at the kitchen table. Her first manuscripts were rejected by the publishers to whom she sent them, but she was able to snag a job as a freelance writer to supplement the family income and be a stay-at-home mom.

When she had the opportunity to have one of her romance manuscripts critiqued by an editor at a Romance Writers' Conference, the results were very disappointing. The editor tore her work apart and even went so far as to suggest that it was garbage. Refusing to accept this Macomber remained undaunted and continued with her writing. She submitted the very same manuscript to Silhouette books and it was purchased becoming the first romance novel to be reviewed by Publishers Weekly.

Since that first sale Debbie has never looked back. She currently has 153 novels to her credit with almost 100 million books in print. Her goal is to write at least three books every year from her office located above an ice-cream parlour.

Her love of knitting is evident in that she brings this talent into play in the majority of her books. She is also dedicated to her growing list of fans and responds to each email she receives. She is also heavily involved in charity work and helps out in her community wherever she can.

She has an exceptional sense of humor which comes through in her writing, sometimes more directly than others. For example, the names of her three Christmas angels are a take on a child's pronunciation of a well-known Bible verse - "Surely goodness and mercy will follow me.....". Her angels and named Shirley, Goodness and Mercy.

An incurable romantic, she has livened up the reading choices from readers all over the world who love to get lost in the hopes and dreams of others. Today her children are grown and Debbie and her husband Wayne delight in their eight grandchildren.
