Testing yourself as an Internet writer

Have you done it? Do you know how many words you can write in a day? What is your average production rate, and how can you improve it? Writers are often heavy thinkers, which is why they don't always maximize their earning potential. Being intellectual is all well and good, but it never has been known to pay the bills. You need to test your ability, reach beyond your limits, create a new comfort zone, and write for a living, not merely to realize your dream, but to discover your true abilities as an Internet writer.

*Take yourself seriously even if others don't. You are a writer. Tell yourself often, and believe it. Give yourself an office, even if it's only a little forgotten corner in your overcrowded house. Put a real desk there. Set up your computer space. So what if you have a transportable laptop. What you are going for is a place that is strictly devoted to your job.

Once you have a desk with your computer on it, it's time to organize your writing tools. Create inboxes, outboxes, library book pile spaces, supply baskets, and whatever else you think you'll need. Squeeze a small file cabinet under your desk, even if you don't plan to use it. Give your space the feel of a genuine work place, like you would have if you went to a regular job.

Decorate the walls too. Put up calendars and family photos. Make a sign that denotes this is the office space of you. That's the fun part because you can brag about who you are and fill in your pen name. People who take themselves seriously tend to work a little harder, producing quality results more quickly.

*Draft a plan. Go ahead and get some coffee. Then take one of your small notepads and write everything you can think of as fast as you can. This is your article list for the day. You may have ten items on it. You could very well have twenty. Plan to conquer this list, bit by bit, as fast as you can. Scratch off each title you fill. Keep a running tally of your articles off to the side. Set your hours. Take a few necessary breaks for food and personal essentials, but keep writing your articles for at least eight solid hours, more if you'd like.

*Form new habits. As you test your limits, discovering the average amount of articles you produce on any given day, you can try to beat your record. You get to challenge yourself to develop new, more disciplined writing habits. This may mean increasing your typing speed and accuracy. It might force you to organize research more efficiently. Perhaps it will give you the fortitude to resist distractions and temptation. Stick with it, and form the habits that will allow you to earn a decent wage for the work you do, one that might just pay the bills and help you discover the beauty of your dream.
