Writing can be one of the most difficult career paths that one can ever hope to take. This is because it is based completely on one's own creativity verses the collective thoughts and opinions of other people. Writing as a career also has a series of pitfalls that one must avoid in order to remain in the field. The biggest pitfall one must avoid is the lull, or dry spells, of the writing world. Other pitfalls that an author must avoid include becoming irrelevant, repeating information, and competition.
Writing can be a very difficult but very rewarding career choice. There is the satisfaction of seeing one's work do well, but it is coupled with the amount of work that one must do in order to see this success. There is no piece that was simply written. Each piece must be researched and reworked from its original design. If an author says that the piece just happened, one must either think that he or she is lying or that the piece was stolen.
Once a piece, be it an article or book, is written, it is not out of the woods. There is still the need to have that piece compared to other pieces. This comparison is most often done by watching how the piece sells or which piece gets more approval. In addition to this style of competition, there is also the need for the public to appreciate the piece. If the general public is not interested in the piece, the article or book will never sell and no success with that piece will be found.
Writing as a career has these issues that every author must conquer, those that are out of his or her hands, and then there are some issues that an author can conquer that are easily within one's hand. These pitfalls of writing often discourage an author who does not know how to handle the dangers, but are easily surmounted by those authors who wield the correct tools of the trade.
A lull or dry spell in writing is one of the most frequent dangers that writers face. This is caused by a lack of creative flow either due to an increase of articles for pieces that one is not interested in or a decrease in ideas. Either cause of the lull is easy to correct. If one is lured into this lull by writing about things they do not care about, they can walk out easily and write about things they like to write about. If the lull is caused by a lack of creative flow due to a decrease in ideas, one can choose a title or do some reading to come up with fresh ideas.
Irrelevance is a large pitfall. There is often a fear in writing that only the author will care
