Dog breed facts: American Blue Gascon Hound

The American Blue Gascon Hound is a very old breed of dog, related to the other Blue Gascon breeds and has its roots in the country of North America. Other Gascon hounds, which have been used in the breeding of the American version, are from the country of France, particularly the Gascon region where they get their name. The American Blue Gascon Hound was developed for the purpose of hunting wolf, bear, and wild boar, although today they are used to hunt other prey, as well.

The American Blue Gascon Hound is a larger breed of dog that sports the typical hound dog head shape and face. According to breed standards, they are to be 25 to 30 inches tall, when measured from the ground to the withers. They should weigh between 75 and 105 pounds, with males almost always being heavier than females. They have the typical hound dog look, with long, floppy ears, tired looking eyes, and jowls that can rouse scents to assist in the hunt. The body should be well-muscled and covered with a short, dense coat of hair. The coat of the American Blue Gascon Hound is completely speckled and spotted in black and white. There is a slate blue tone to the coat, which contributes to the name. In most of these dogs, there will be two black spots on the face, one on each side. Tan markings may also be on the American Blue Gascon Hound on various parts of the body, especially underneath the tail and on the legs.

As all hound dogs do, the American Blue Gascon Hound has an amazing sense of smell and a howl that is both loud and enduring. This is how the dog communicates with both humans and other dogs. This tendency to make noise makes them much more suited to life in the country rather than in town, where neighbors may not appreciate this howling and baying. They are social animals that are happy to hunt together in packs, but they are also skilled as bloodhounds where they typically work solo. Due to their size, they are slower than some other breeds of hound, but they are steady and tenacious when on the job. They track both large and small game with great success.

These are very gentle and loving animals who will develop very strong attachments to their owner or the families that they are a part of. The American Blue Gascon Hound is not an animal that should be inhibited by city boundaries. They need room for exercise and fun, so they are really country dogs in personality, even aside from the noise issue. They must begin training early on and require a firm and consistent master to assist them in becoming all that they can be. With calm, consistent training, the dog will learn quickly, especially lessons that have anything to do with their natural hunting instincts.
