Top 5 Investment Books
During the last 10 years or so I have traded the markets and prior to starting to invest and also all the time I have been investing, I have tried to read as much as I could in the belief that a little education goes a long way to helping you be successful. The five best books I have read include the following.
The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham
Benjamin Graham was the father of value investing and he took a business like approach to the subject by comparing the value of the company to the value of the share before making an investment decision. The Intelligent Investor sets out a lot of his thinking on the subject and is a must read if you are considering becoming an investor. It has chapters on stock market history, approaches to investing for both defensive and adventurous investors and the final chapter brings things together to discuss Graham's 'Margin of Safety' approach to investing. This is an excellent book with much useful advice and guidance.
Buffetology by Mary Buffet and David Clark
Warren Buffet is simply the worlds best investor and has been consistently so over many years. Mary Buffet and David Clark came together to write a book that captured the essence of Buffet's investment style. The result was Buffetology. It is set out in two main parts, the first being a qualitative section which details how Buffet goes about identifying good companies to invest in. The second part of the book is the quantitative section and this details the math's that can be used to determine if an investment makes sense from a financial perspective. The book is set out in short easy to read chapters and gives a good sense of Buffet's overall investing style.
How to Use Financial Statements by James Bandler
Everyone who seeks to be a better investor needs to have a basic understanding of financial statements, such that they can review a company's annual accounts and understand the implications of these. There are many books on the subject, but Bandler's book is the best one I have found. It explains things in simple terms, making it easy to pick up a basic understanding of financial statements. It has a chapter on each of the main sections of a company's annual accounts explaining the key numbers in each of these. You don't need to be an accountant to invest but understanding financial statements is important and Bandler's book will help you achieve this.
