Magic the Gathering card analysis: Darksteel Garrison

"Darksteel Garrison" is a colorless artifact printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." This is a type of artifact that is different from the equipment artifacts. It is a type of artifact used to fortify a permanent. In this case, the Darksteel Garrison is an artifact that is meant to fortify your lands. If you have some vital lands on the battlefield, Darksteel Garrison becomes very useful for the most part.

The converted mana cost for Darksteel Garrison is two. You will need two colorless mana to play the Darksteel Garrison. For what Darksteel Garrison can do, the converted mana cost seems to be well worth it for the most part. Keep in mind that Darksteel Garrison is an artifact. It means that Darksteel Garrison is susceptible to anything and everything that goes after artifacts. There is a Fortify cost of three mana which is paid to attach it to a target land. Make sure the land does not have Shroud.

What does Darksteel Garrison do in the first place?

When you fortify a land with Darksteel Garrison, that land becomes indestructible. In that respect, the fortified land will be immune from spells such as "Armageddon," "Catastrophe," "Rain of Tears," or "Stone Rain." However, Darksteel Garrison itself is not invulnerable. It means that Darksteel Garrison can be taken out with spells such as "Disenchant" and "Naturalize."

However, there is somewhat more to Darksteel Garrison. Whenever Darksteel Garrison becomes tapped, you can give a target creature +1/+1 until the end of the turn. Giving a creature that slight boost does help a whole lot. In this respect, you tap the fortified land for mana and give a target creature +1/+1.

While Darksteel Garrison protects the land from land destruction spells and abilities, it does not protect from spells and abilities that make you sacrifice, return to your hand, or Exile a land. Should that happen, Darksteel Garrison remains on the battlefield. You can then pay the three mana and use Darksteel Garrison to fortify another land. The main drawback to Darksteel Garrison is that you can only use this ability as a sorcery spell. It means you can only fortify a land with Darksteel Garrison when it is your turn.

If the ability could be played as an instant spell, it could increase the popularity of the Darksteel Garrison. Overall, Darksteel Garrison is an interesting artifact to have. In an extended deck format, it could prove useful to have three or four of them on the battlefield. That way, you can still somewhat protect your mana.
