Although reusing plastic bottles and bags has become a necessity in the modern fast life, the fact that it has become a dangerous menace for our body and environment cannot be minimized. Scientific studies increasingly have shown that plastic is harmful on our bodies directly and indirectly. The Times magazine has suggested that the best way to minimize these dangers is to cut down its use as far as possible.

Seven Shocking Health Dangers of Reusing Plastic Bottles and Bags

1) The serious danger of baby bottles

One of the most overlooked hazards is the polycarbonate plastic baby bottle you use to feed your baby. Though it looks harmless, it contains the common chemical known as bisphenol-A (BPA) which is quite dangerous for health as it interferes with the body's natural hormonal system. The Chicago Tribune has stated the concern of the researchers with the evils of this common chemical BPA and suggests that these baby bottles should be tossed out along with any toys suspected of containing lead or dangerous magnet.

2) Reusing plastic bottles and bags affects the sexual system

Researchers have found BPA acts similar to the female sex hormone known as estradiol. During animal studies, scientists have discovered that BPA causes female reproductive problems, early onset of puberty, and cancer of the breast and the prostate at even low levels of exposure to BPA. They have also cited about its link to lowered sperm counts and developmental issues.

3) Dangerous to children

The Tribune has reported about the risk of BPA to brain development of fetuses, babies, or children. It affects mostly the growing children.

4) Heating the bottles for cleaning, etc. causes micro bacterial infections

Heating the plastic bottle in the dishwasher, sterilizer, or microwave can cause partial infection. The incidence of leaching is much more severe from heated plastic bottles than unheated ones.

5) There is a danger of contamination

Chemicals may contaminate food and drinks preserved in reused plastic bottles.

Studies have pointed out that food and drinks stored in such containers, including those ubiquitous water bottles, can contain a trace amount of BPA.

6) Usage plastic bottles and bags can lead to cancer and other diseases.

The usage of these bottles can affect the hormonal system and cause premature delivery, low birth weight, miscarriage, infertility, chromosomal defects and even cancer.

7) Long usage can cause infection and stomach problems

Using these bottles repeatedly for a long time can be a breeding ground of bacteria and cause diseases like diarrhea and vomiting. They can increase chances of contracting infections, strep throat, meningitis, and other diseases.
