Leadership requirements

Leadership, although a vague concept, has important ramifications on any organization, both when properly and improperly applied. Opinions of the ideal leader vary from organization to organization, with aggressive, demanding individuals considered successful in one organization, and reserved, soft-spoken leaders considered successful in another. Although each person has their own leadership philosophy, successful leadership can be achieved by being aware of the components of leadership.

The requirements for being a successful leader can be divided into two components. The first involves who the leader is, and the second, what the leader does. Of course, there are numerous articles, debates, and arguments on what makes a good leader, but a successful leader must both have good qualities of leadership, and act in accordance with those attributes. Integrity, morality, a willingness to succeed, honesty, ambition, and people skills are only a few of the characteristics considered to be desirable leadership attributes. However, without good actions to back up these characteristics, a person cannot be considered a true leader. In order to act in accordance with their qualities, someone aspiring to be a leader should attempt to succeed in these few areas.

First, a successful leader must take interest in their people. People are the backbone of any organization. Without soldiers, for example, the military would not be able to perform security details, fly planes, operate naval vessels, or complete daily operations. Without vast numbers of employees, Walmart would no longer be able to clean its stores, stock it shelves, or help customers find their desired merchandise. Each and every employee in every organization has the capacity to bring down the organization, or to contribute to new levels of achievement. Leaders should attempt to get to know their people in order to encourage them to perform at the highest levels.

Second, a successful leader must provide the organization with a vision of the organization's future. Without the assurance of the company's growth and success, employees may be dissuaded from giving their best because they know their potential for promotion is low. The leader must provide opportunities for advancement, and make the company aware of the goals to be achieved at checkpoints down the road. Without this vision, competitors will assuredly outperform the organization. Assuring achieving growth within the company indicates successful leadership.
