Magic the Gathering card analysis: Magus of the Moat

"Magus of the Moat" is a 0/3 white human wizard printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." This is one of the five rare "Magus" cards printed in the Future Sight expansion set. Like the other four Magus cards, Magus of the Moat has somewhat of a theme that can affect the dynamic of the game. In this respect, Magus of the Moat seems to be good in a control deck with white cards.

The converted mana cost for Magus of the Moat is four. You will need two white mana and two colorless mana to play Magus of the Moat onto the battlefield. For what Magus of the Moat can do, the converted mana cost is well worth it. This is perhaps one of the cards that can slow down aggressive deck players for the most part. If you are playing defensively with white, then Magus of the Moat is something that could be worth looking into.

What does Magus of the Moat do in the first place?

Magus of the Moat is a rather interesting card that will shut down most creatures. When Magus of the Moat is on the battlefield, creatures cannot attack unless they have Flying. If you have a bunch of Flying creatures while you have Magus of the Moat on the battlefield, you can attack. Your opponents will need to have creatures with Flying or Reach in order to block.

In this respect, most of your opponent's creatures cannot attack. In this respect, they cannot block either unless they have creatures with Flying or Reach. By playing Magus of the Moat, you have effectively shut down a good number of creature decks. However, Magus of the Moat would be worthless against decks with plenty of creatures with the ability of Flying.

This is a good card to have if you want to shut down cards such as "Progenitus," "Darksteel Colossus," "Protean Hydra," "Apocalypse Hydra," and so forth. Progenitus has Protection from Everything. However, Progenitus does not have Flying. With Magus of the Moat on the battlefield, you do not have to worry about an opponent attacking you with Progenitus. The same goes for the other cards mentioned.

Unfortunately, a simple spell such as "Lightning Bolt" will kill Magus of the Moat. However, I have found this to be a good card in an extended format. There is much use of Magus of the Moat if you are using a Bant-themed EDH (Elder Dragon Highlander) deck. You can combine Magus of the Moat to keep non-Flying creatures from attacking you. You can play the blue enchantment called "Levitation" on your creatures.

Overall, Magus of the Moat is still a pretty good card to have. If you have a control deck and have plenty of flying creatures, then Magus of the Moat is a card worth having on hand.
