Magic the Gathering card analysis: Magus of the Vineyard

"Magus of the Vineyard" is a 1/1 green human wizard printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." This is one of the five rare "Magus" cards printed in the Future Sight expansion set. In a sense, this does help with mana acceleration. However, using Magus of the Vineyard is pretty much a double-edged sword. It can help you while sting you at the same time. This is somewhat of a good card in a green deck.

The converted mana cost for Magus of the Vineyard is one. You will need one green mana to play Magus of the Vineyard. It is worth paying the one green mana for what Magus of the Vineyard can offer for the most part. Magus of the Vineyard is an example that green has the best mana acceleration out of all of the five colors of mana.

What does Magus of the Vineyard do in the first place?

As long as Magus of the Vineyard is on the battlefield, players get to add two green mana at the start of the precombat main phase. In this respect, before the combat phase, players get to add two green mana. This is an ability that will either help greatly or sting you badly. If you are playing a mono green deck, having that two green mana should help a whole lot. This way, you can play spells much faster. However, this can still hurt you in the process.

This helps out your opponents at the same time. If your opponents do not have green cards, they can use the extra mana to pay off the colorless mana costs. That in turn should be bad for you. Also, you need to think about opponents that are using green cards. If that is the case, you are simply handing opponents the advantage with Magus of the Vineyard. On top of that, the mana burn ruling has been done away with ever since the release of the "Magic 2010" core set. If opponents cannot use the mana, they do not suffer from mana burn.

However, there is one method you can use to milk this ability for what it is worth. Remember to use this in a deck with plenty of green cards. What you want to do is have this green enchantment called "Mana Reflection." Mana Reflection doubles the mana produced from all of your sources. When it is your turn, you will get four green mana at the start of your precombat phase. In a green deck, four extra green mana goes a long way.

Overall, this is a card that can help you out. However, it is risky to use the card because it grants your opponents extra mana. So far, it is highly inadvisable to use Magus of the Vineyard against opponents that are also using green decks.
