Reasons why you should try to write about what you know

by Cody Hodge

If you are looking to improve your writing, an easy way to start is write about things you know about. Writing about things you are knowledgeable about will give your writing a sense of authority that will help your piece stand out. It will also make it more interesting to write about so that spending extra time on a particular work won't seem like such a chore. Are there any other advantages of writing about topics you know about?

When you are writing about what you know the most about, you are giving yourself the opportunity to write a more in-depth piece. You know the information almost by heart, you know what you want to say and how you want to say it. More importantly, you will want to get the information right because it is a topic you want to be seen as an expert in.

Having a good working knowledge of the topic means you know where to go to do your research. When you go to write about a topic it is good when you know exactly which sources to go to for information. Researching a topic can be time consuming, so knowing where your information is going to come from ahead of time can help you get more done in less time.

A topic that you have a lot of knowledge about is a lot more fun to write about because it is something that you have a passion for. This means that you look forward to writing the article and will take more pride in it. This really makes your writing more enjoyable while making the process of writing seem a little less scary.

Writing about a topic that you know a lot about is fun because you might learn things you never even knew. For example, you might be a baseball fan, but had no idea that the Baltimore Orioles won the World Series in 1983. A younger person might only see a topic for what it is today, but researching further might put today's issues into context. A person might think this is the worst economy ever, but will change their view after reading of the Great Depression.

Writing about a topic that you know a lot about is a fun experience. It makes the writing process seem less daunting because you will enjoy the process more. The passion that you have for the topic will show through and make your writing come off as natural and authoritative. You might even learn a thing or two that you never knew before and expand your knowledge base. These are all good reasons to write about topics you know about.
