What is premenstrual syndrome (PMS)?

When women have Premenstrual Syndrome that is commonly called PMS, this means that there a several types of symptoms that a woman has before her period. These can be things such as sore breasts, mood swings, feeling depressed or agitated, having certain food cravings, and feeling fatigued. Women that are anywhere from late teens until even in their 40's can experience these symptoms of PMS.

Some women need treatment that is ongoing with antidepressants since PMS is actually covering up some really deep depression and this makes everything worse. The causes for PMS are hormonal shifts and changes, and possibly lack of serotonin in the brain. If you have a shortage of this neurotransmitter in the brain, it can cause the mood changes and depression right on through into insomnia and your feelings of tiredness. Medications such as Paxil or Zoloft will help the Serotonin in the brain to increase, and therefore, improve your depressive symptoms.

PMS can also stem from a poor diet where you are not getting enough vitamins in your system. Making your diet more well-rounded in leafy green vegetables and fruits may actually help to relieve some of your PMS symptoms.

Treating PMS can be done by the use of several therapies. One of them is using birth control pills which often helps to relieve your symptoms. There are birth control pills which have progestin drospirenone in them, which help to relieve many of the symptoms both mental and physical from PMS.

problems. Medications that help serotonin to be more present in brain cells, often helps to relieve many of the psychological symptoms, help the appetite regulation, and give you better energy.

Taking over the counter pain relievers that are non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can do a lot for cramps and other symptoms such as painful breast swelling. Advil,Motrin, and Ibuprofen are good ones to keep on hand for this time of the month.

If menstrual cycles along with your PMS are totally out of control, there is another option known as Depo-Provera in injectable form. You take this injection every 3 months in order to stop ovulation from occurring, and your periods will completely come to a halt as well. The only thing about this medicine is that you cannot be planning to become pregnant anytime soon since obviously without ovulation, there is a zero chance of that happening. Depo Provera may also be counter-effective if you are on antidepressants since the drug can cause depression and cause your weight to increase as well.
