Magic the Gathering card analysis: Magus of the Moon

"Magus of the Moon" is a 2/2 red human wizard printed as a rare for the Magic the Gathering expansion set known as "Future Sight." This is one of the five rare "Magus" cards printed in the Future Sight expansion set. So far, Magus of the Moon is good in a red deck. At the same time, Magus of the Moon is a good card to use to shut down many multicolored and artifact decks.

The converted mana cost for Magus of the Moon is three. You will need one red mana and two colorless mana to play Magus of the Moon from your hand and onto the battlefield. For what Magus of the Moon can do, the three mana cost is very reasonable enough. However, Magus of the Moon is only good as a sideboard if your opponents are playing nonbasic lands. If that is the case, then put Magus of the Moon in your deck if you are playing with red cards.

What does Magus of the Moon do in the first place?

This is the creature version of this red enchantment spell known as "Blood Moon." Like Blood Moon, Magus of the Moon turns all nonbasic lands into mountains. In this respect, you can shut down a majority of multicolored and artifact decks. Because of this ability, you want to use Magus of the Moon as a sideboard against decks that use nonbasic lands. There are plenty of decks that rely upon nonbasic lands.

In the case of a multicolored decks, it is a given that they will require a good number of nonbasic lands. This is because many of the nonbasic lands can produce two colors, three colors, or five colors of mana. Multicolored decks need good mana fixing. If there is not enough mana fixing, players with those multicolored decks are almost left defenseless while they wait for the needed color of mana. Should their mana fixing get shut down, then those players are in a non-win situation.

Magus of the Moon is one such card that puts multicolored deck users in a no-win situation. By turning nonbasic lands into mountains, players that are using multicolored decks will have a hard time putting out their creatures. For multicolored cards, it is impossible to play them on the battlefield because of this.

In an extended format, this can shut down numerous artifact decks. In the Mirrodin block, artifact lands were released. They are artifacts and lands at the same time. This dynamic boosted many artifacts that were dependent upon other artifacts. With the Alara block, they had colored artifacts.

Overall, Magus of the Moon is a great card to have provided that you know your opponents have plenty of nonbasic cards in their decks. In that case, go right ahead and use Magus of the Moon.
