Magic the Gathering card analysis: Jhoira of the Ghitu

Suspend is one of my favorite keywords of recent years in magic the gathering. It does a lot of the things that I like, allowing me to play something early turn, messes with counter spells, makes for explosive endings and is generally fun. The only real weakness of the mechanic is that there are a limited number of cards that it can use.

Jhoira of the Ghitu overcomes that ability. A legendary human wizard from the future sight expansion set of magic the gathering. She costs one blue mana, one red mana and one colorless mana to put into play and is a 2/2 creature. Her real power though is in her ability which costs two colorless mana and reads "Exile a nonland card from your hand: Put four time counters on the exiled card. If it doesn't have suspend, it gains suspend. (At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter from that card. When the last is removed, cast it without paying its mana cost. If it's a creature, it has haste.) "

The weakness of this card is of course that the cards that you suspend in general will not come into play until the seventh or eight turn of the game. This is late in a typical constructed game, but this is only a minor weakness as there are a number of ways to overcome this.

One of the most useful cards with this is the Greater Gargadon and other creatures that come into play with more that four suspend counters. This powerful creature usually has ten counters and they can be removed by sacrificing artifacts creatures or lands, by reducing that to four you can put the creature into play far earlier.

Another card that I am very fond of is the rift elemental. A 1/1 creature for one red mana you can pay one red and one colorless to remove a time counter from a suspended card or a permanent you control and it gets +2/+0. This is a win win for you as you can do five damage with the card for four mana and put a suspended card out two turns earlier. And since a creature that costs only one mana is almost always needed in decks it works out well.

Finally there is the five color deck advantage. Since all you have to do is pay two colorless to suspend a card it doesn't matter if you actually have the mana to pay for the card, this means that you have an extra way to play those difficult five color spells with this in play.
