Reasons to write about topics you know nothing about

They say that you should write about what you know. On the other hand, there are good reasons to write about topics that you know nothing about as well. It can be mutually beneficial to not only you, but the community as well to write on topics that you might know nothing about. When you write about something you don't know about, you might be able to write from a new angle, or an angle that hasn't been explored yet. That is never a bad thing.

For the writer, it can be a good thing to explore new topics simply to expand your own horizons. Instead of writing about football, why not write about soccer? Instead of writing about American politics, why not write a little bit about British politics? You don't even have to stray far from an area that you know a lot about, but you can still get some new insights, and offer new insights of your own.

When you write about topics that you know nothing about, you have a chance to practice your research skills. It can be hard to go out and research topics you already know about because chances are that you have all the information in your head, or the information might be common knowledge. When you are writing about a topic you know nothing about, you are going to want to cite more, because you might not be sure as to what is common knowledge.

Writing about a topic you know nothing about also means that you get a chance to really work those critical thinking skills. When you know a topic inside and out, you might just take for granted what you know, and the things that you believe about the topic. However, when you take a look at a new topic, you are going to take some time to think about what others say about the topic, and really look at what you are reading, and taking extra time to see if your argument makes sense.

Writing to a topic that you have no real base of knowledge about can be scary, but it can enhance your portfolio. If you are always writing about one topic, it can really make it hard to get jobs elsewhere. You might be able to get a job from another site, or a news agency simply because you took the time to research one article, and it was a hit.

Always try to take some time to write about a topic that you know little about. Even if the article doesn't do well, it will be good practice for you in terms of critical thinking, and research skills. It will force you to think harder, and research harder as well, and it will expand your horizons. It might even seem like a nice change of pace as well, and who knows what it will do for your portfolio.
