Our daily life is, indeed, a series of choices based on present need, past experience and fear of the resulting outcome.
I know, it would seem more practical to say that it would be from wanting to do good for your self and others, but usually we act or react to things in life from the fears that are conjured up in our minds or hearts based on the bad things that have happened to us or others.
In this American society, we are told not to talk to strangers (because they might hurt us or steal from us or kidnap us); not to eat the wrong types of food (it could be full of bad calories, or E. Coli, or someone else's meal); we should not hug or shake hands (because that could transmit disease); we should not look others straight in the eye (they may not like it, or they are hiding something in their hearts they do not want others to see)there are way too many don'ts in modern society. But why? Simply put, fear.
Fear is our number one enemy. Enemies are not other people, they are the fears that live inside us and cause us to react to life incidents in a particular way.
So, we look at someone who is older and yet seemingly at peace and we have to assume that they are wiser than us.
Chances are, that is true! There is a certain chain-reaction to daily life and the choices we make. The outcomes can vary greatly, thus, teaching us different things. It is what we hold on to and employ back into our lives, that truly make the fear diminish and the wholeness more observant.
Let's look at a person who has seen war, say WWII, and the atrocities thereof. They understand hate and fear for others. They understand forgiveness and hope. They understand what they do not ever want in their life again. They understand how they can work within the world and make whatever difference to themselves and others that is possible at any given moment.
A person who has seen death and destruction, one who is a living monument to grace and servitude knows how to bridle their tongue, hold a shaking hand and transmit a gentle compassion for healing, and although emotional scars will exist, a truly healthy person succumbs to the fact that they were not the cause of what happened but only a part of it. Now that it is over, there are lessons to understand and never repeat.
Sure there is pain with recall. Of course, the recurring dreams have to be dealt with in whatever way is needed to create a fear-less daily life. A wise person will walk with a humility and understanding of
