Eco-friendly tips for a green Thanksgiving

In this age of every modern convenience ever known to exist, we take pretty much everything for granted. There was a time, however, when people didn't have the luxury of using disposable cooking pans, paper or plastic table cloths, or plates, plastic silverware and much more. We are used to throwing things away, wrapping leftovers up in plastic wrap, aluminum foil, plastic bags or other disposable things.

Perhaps this Thanksgiving, each of us could reconsider the manner in which we generate useless waste when we prepare our holiday dinner. Even if it only means that people are willing to make a few minor changes, those changes can still go a long way towards making for a cleaner environment.

Here are some tips that are easy to implement and that are easily affordable.

*Cloth instead of paper -

When it comes to a table cloth and napkins, opt to use cloth instead of paper. Although the cloth may appear to cost more than the paper, people will naturally not be wasteful with cloth linen, but that wouldn't be the case with paper.

*Avoid disposable dishes and silverware -

Paper plates and plastic silverware generates an incredible amount of garbage. People don't stop to think when they throw a dirty plate away and take a new one to get seconds. What's more, if people are using regular dishes, they will have to be more cautious about how much they put on their plate because the plate can only hold so much.

*Avoid cooking in disposable cookware -

Many people cook their turkeys in a disposable foil pan. Doing so means that no matter how messy things get, there is nothing to clean up. It may not seem like what each of us uses amounts to much, but if every home that prepares a Thanksgiving dinner uses disposable cookware, the amount of garbage that would wind up in our landfills is truly unfathomable.

*Clean up as you go -

If you clean up as you go, you will have less to do after the meal, but more than that, you will not waste as much water as you would if you were trying to wash everything all at once, leaving the water running the entire time.

*Fill up a dish pan with soapy water -

By filling the dishpan with soapy water, you will have a place to rinse or wash dishes. Rather than leave the water running to rinse the dishes, put them all in a dish drainer and then when the dishes are done, use the hose to rinse them off. That will use considerably less water.

*Fill up the dishwasher completely -

Rather than trying to separate the dishes for convenience or anything else,
