The best of 2009: Vacations

by James Tennant

Created on: November 06, 2009

In a year hit by recession and financial depression, the best holidays of 2009 surely offered the individual some peace, stress relief and as little cost as is possible. Whether it be a sunny summer getaway or a winter wonderland you are looking for, this article will provide you with some great ideas.

Summers in the Sun:

Looking for the perfect summer getaway can be an arduous task. There are so many places to go, each with their own bonuses. This article will try and give a few great examples of places to go that will hopefully satisfy all criteria.

Adriatic Coast:

Slovenia - Slovenia is the undiscovered gem of the Adriatic. A quaint, peaceful and stunning country with some epic coastlines, it offers a lot to the holiday maker who wants to get away from it all. A glorious Mediterranean climate means that during the summer, the temperatures can easily get into the high 20's and low 30's. There is virtually no tourism here, meaning Slovenia has an untouched culture that is as genuine now as it was 100 years ago. There is a little bit of recent history concerning the fall of communism that is interesting, but it is the countrysides, the landscapes and the beautiful scenery that makes this country so special. The price of food, beer and drinks are cheap to reasonable and you really get a lot for what you spend. Try visiting Lake Bled, about 45 minutes by train outside the capital Ljubljana for a relaxing day out. Potoroz by the sea offers great beaches and beautiful coastlines for the more active holiday maker.

Croatia - More popular with tourists than its neighbour; Slovenia, Croatia tends to offer a broader range of activities but comes with a higher price tag. It offers great beaches and great weather and some fantastic unspoiled scenery. The coastal towns and cities are the true highlights of the country. Dubrovnik, often described as the Pearl of the Adriatic rests on the southern most point of the country and is Croatia's main attraction. Streets lined with marble, unlittered and clean, help to make this place feel so special. Resting on the coast, Dubrovnik truly is a beautiful place and well worth a visit. Try to stay away from Split and other mainland cities; they don't offer anywhere near as great an experience as the coast and tend to be more expensive.

Winter Wonderlands:

Holidaying in the winter, and not just to a hot destination can be a fun and unique choice. However, when searching for a winter wonderland, many people don't know where to start.
