Magic the Gathering card analysis: Epochrasite

Creatures that are difficult to kill or that your opponent doesn't want to kill are some of the most fun and effective creatures in magic the gathering. This cards if used correctly can creature nearly unwinnable situations for the opponent and that is the type of situation that any magic the gathering player wants to put his opponent into.

Epochrasite is a rare artifact creature construct from the future Sight expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs two colorless mana to put into play and is a 1/1 creature, but it has two abilities which make it far more than another overly expensive artifact creature.

The first of these abilities reads "Epochrasite enters the battlefield with three +1/+1 counters on it if you didn't cast it from your hand."

This alone isn't all that exciting of an ability. Sure you could try to find some way to play it from the graveyard but if you have a reanimation spell you would probably rather use it on something besides a 4/4 artifact creature.

The second of the abilities though is really the important one this reads "When Epochrasite is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, exile it with three time counters on it and it gains suspend. (At the beginning of your upkeep, remove a time counter. When the last is removed, cast this card without paying its mana cost. It has haste.)"

This is a very useful ability because not only does it make it almost impossible for your opponent to get rid of this card permanently but it makes your opponent not really want to kill it. In fact having used this in tournament play I have found that it can make for a useful evasion ability as you can attack into much larger creature with it and people will choose not to block, and while having a 4/4 creature is preferable to a 1/1, being able to do one damage a turn is preferable to having a 4/4 creature that can not do anything.

In addition this card works very well with storm as it helps set up for high storm count turns as you can play this on your second turn and make a very powerful turn.

Suspend is a fun mechanic and having a card that suspends itself is a great idea with a lot of powerful possibilities as well as being a very good limited card.
