Magic the Gathering card analysis: Daybreak Coronet

Auras are a fun card type in magic the gathering but one that is very difficult to play in any tournament setting. The reason for this is basically that players have too much creature removal and adding an aura to a creature make it a target since when the creature dies the aura goes with it. So, what is more dangerous than playing an aura on a creature for the card equality of the game, playing two auras on the same creature.

Daybreak Coronet is a rare enchantment aura from the Futuresite expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs two white mana to be played and can only be attached to a creature that already has an Aura attached to it.

For this it gives the creature +3/+3, first strike, vigilance and lifelink. All good abilities and it does make you want to try the card and there may be a few ways to do so, so rather than focusing on just how dangerous this card is to play let us focus on how best to use this card if you are going to.

The first way to use this card effectively is on creature that gain a bonus for having auras attached to them. There are a few of these, my favorite just for the flavor is the rabid wombat. This creature gets +2/+2 for every aura attached to it, making it a more valuable card to attach multiple auras too, and since this is an inexpensive aura you may be able to add it early enough in the game that the wombat will be completely unstoppable. This doesn't stop the opponent from simply using terror on it though.

That leads to the second way, there are quite a number of cards in the game of magic that can not be targeted by your opponents spells or abilities. These are an excellent target for your auras because while they can still be killed by wrath of god effects. Not only are these cards the best cards to use auras on because your opponent can't kill them but they are also more likely to be blocked when they attack since your opponent will want to take the chance to kill them.

Even with all of this it is unlikely that this is ever going to see serious tournament play but as a casual card building a deck around it could be a lot of fun.
