Our society relishes the hottest computer technology, and 2009 offered fantastic and inexpensive software solutions for communicating online, editing video to share with friends and family, and for keeping our PC systems running in top condition. This article looks at the top three software packages available in 2009.
Skype 4.1
Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace keep us updated on activities of family and friends, but these sites cannot replace the human connection experienced with live conversation. Skype Version 4.1 features free video calls, instant messaging, and quick directory searches, combining them into an impressive communication package for 2009.
In less than five minutes you can download the latest version of Skype, search and upload contacts from your existing Gmail or Hotmail address book, begin chatting with friends and hosting free video calls. During registration and setup, the program automatically generates a suggestion for your Skype Name, and even searches for your web cam. We reviewed Skype using a Microsoft LifeCam 1.1 with an integrated microphone. Once the program finds the web cam, a preview window appears so you can test video and sound quality.
Although you can chat or conduct a video call free online with any of your contacts, the Skype interface features three shortcut tabs to get you started in VoIP (voice over IP) conversations. The Call Phones tab brings up a keypad for dialing. Your first call is free, but additional calls can be purchased through monthly subscriptions or by purchasing Skype Credit. Skype has kept prices low and offers a $2.95 per month package for unlimited calls to the US and Canada, $5.95 for unlimited calls to Mexico, and $12.95 for unlimited access to any landlines.
Using the Directory tab you can search for anyone on Skype by typing a Skype user name, full name or email address and pressing search. If you are searching for a business such as a restaurant or hotel, Skype searches your entry in numerous countries. For quick access to buying Skype credit or purchase a subscription or accessories, the Shop tab provides a direct link to the Skype website for purchases.
The Skype interface is easy to navigate and offers an add-in to integrate Skype with Outlook. With a friendly layout and optional subscription packages, Skype is the best communications software for 2009.
