Magic the Gathering card analysis: Angel of Salvation

I often have difficulty taking damage prevention seriously in white because when I first began to play it was so underpowered compared to the other abilities of white. Balance, swords to plowshares, Armageddon, and Land Tax were all available as well as wrath of God making the idea of using a card like alabaster potion a general joke, but those cards are no longer available and the game of magic has changed enough that damage prevention is a good choice on some cards.

Angel of Salvation is a rare flying angel from the Future Sight expansion set of magic the gathering. It costs two white and six colorless to put into play, and is a 5/5, but it has convoke meaning that you can tap creatures in order to help pay for it. This makes it far more likely that you can put this into play earlier as well as making its ability a bit more interesting.

The ability of Angel of Salvation is that when it comes into play you can prevent the next five damage that would be done this turn to any number of creatures or players divided how you want. To make this ability work, as well as simply to make this a better creature it also has flash.

Of the three abilities on this card flash is the one that is the easiest to over look and likely the most powerful, especially when combined with convoke which makes it far easier for you to put into play. One of the best ways to use this combination would be to leave several small creatures untapped wait until your opponent attacks and then flash out Angel of Salvation, not only can you then block one of the larger flying creatures that they assumed would get though but you can prevent five damage as well making it likely that the only two things which happened due to their attack is that they lost a creature and left themselves open for your counter attack.

If you use a lot of creatures convoke is a good ability, otherwise it simply leads to creatures that are too expensive. This is sometimes difficult to judge because one has to be careful not to put too many creatures out for fear that your opponent will cast wrath of god and simply kill them all while leaving his hand full of cards but three or four small creatures is not unreasonable and that is enough to put this card out easily.
